"The Bible isn’t meant to keep people apart; it isn’t meant to be a badge of honor. The worst sin is pride, and you can have a religious pride that is sinful. I didn’t see that for a long time—the way religion can be used to hurt people. I knew history—all the hate in the name of religion. But in everyday life, even before I became Catholic, I had assumed that people who took the time to read the Bible and pray were going to behave better toward other people, because they would be influenced by all the beauty in that book. But I was naive, maybe blind."

This reminds me of when I—non-Christian-culture-kid-that-I-was (adolescent convert from non-Christian family)—transferred to Christian College in order to “get my life together,” naively assuming that I would be surrounded by people who really LOVED TO STUDY THE BIBLE or DO CHARITY WORK or BE NICE TO EACH OTHER. This, sadly, was not the case. Is this because my school was in Massachusetts, where people lack the milk of human kindness? Maybe, but more likely it was just a bunch of college kids whose parents made them go to Christian school, despite the fact that they wished they were living in frat houses at Ole Miss or some such nonsense. It was pretty depressing, TBH.

Although, in case you’ve figured out which evangelical flagship I’m referring to, in MA, I want to qualify this post by saying that the profs and staff were amazing and tried to live out their faith in their teaching and relationships with students. Too bad the students were a bunch of—-
