Choice quote from Mark Driscoll’s new book on marriage:

invisibleforeigner:

In this season we shifted into ministry-and-family mode, neglecting our intimacy and failing to work through our issues. This became apparent to me when my pregnant wife came home from a hair appointment with her previously long hair that I loved chopped off and replaced with a short, mommish haircut. She asked what I thought, and could tell by the look on my face. She had put a mom’s need for convenience before being a wife. She wept.

I can’t believe this is real.

(Quote can be found here)

Upon reading this quote, I thought, “I wonder if it’s a coincidence that Tim Keller is releasing a book on marriage at the same time.” As in, is he trying to provide a more palatable, irenic, intelligent, yuppie-friendly (perhaps more affirming of women who are in positions of power outside of the home) version of the same message? This made me think, “why is it that, with very similar theology, and as members of the same ministry organizations, TK is so gracious, thoughtful, charitable and articulate, and MD is so gleefully regressive, bellicose, reductive and combative? The one sprinkles his sermons with excerpts from New York Review of Books and continental philosophers, the other with exhortations to watch MMA and cage fighting.

Here’s my point: does this say something about *Seattle* as a city? Is this what appeals to US, versus what appeals to New York? Is this “fitting” for my lovely, progressive hometown? Beneath all of our culture and recycling and mountain climbing, is this who we are??
